Sonya graduated from Melbourne University, and moved directly to small animal practice. After a detour via industry, she decided to specialise and teach. She completed a residency via the 'alternative programme' which was 4 years part-time and private practice based. Sonya has a Diploma in Education and is a Fellow of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in dermatology. She founded the Animal Skin & Allergy Clinic and remained in practice (joined by her husband, Ralf, in 1992) until she too left for Colorado. Sonya shares the faculty position in clinical dermatology with Ralf but spends most of her time running the dermatopathology service for the diagnostic laboratory of the Colorado State University, drawing cases from as far apart geographically as Alaska and Arizona.
