Dr Mitten is presently lecturing small animal medicine in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Services at the University of Melbourne. His interests include cardiovascular and upper respiratory tract diseases of the dog and cat, and general clinical medicine.

Previously Dr Mitten was an Associate Professor and Head of Radiology at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine from 1973 to 1980 and prior to that, House Surgeon, School of Veterinary Medicine, Cambridge University.

Russell is the tutor for the Cardiology Distance Education Program.
